How to create an online form (step by step)
Creating a good online form is less about software and more about knowing what you want to learn. This guide walks you through the four steps that turn a vague idea into a form people actually finish, from defining the goal to sharing the link and reviewing responses.
Start with the goal
Before you add a single field, decide exactly what you need from each respondent and what you will do with the answers. A form is a tool for a decision: a registration list, a support triage queue, a customer satisfaction score. When the outcome is clear, every field either earns its place or gets cut.
Write the goal in one sentence, then list only the data points that serve it. Most forms collect more than they need, which lengthens the form and lowers completion. If you cannot explain why a question exists, remove it.
Choose the right fields
Match each piece of information to the simplest field type that captures it cleanly. The right field reduces typos, speeds people up, and makes your data easier to analyze later.
- Text, names, short answers, anything free-form and brief.
- Email, contact details, with built-in format validation.
- Select or multiple choice, when answers fall into a fixed set of options.
- File upload, documents, images, CVs, or receipts.
- Rating or NPS, quick satisfaction and loyalty scores.
Add logic and validation
Validation keeps your data clean: mark essential fields as required, and let email and number fields reject malformed input automatically. Conditional logic keeps the form short by showing or hiding questions based on earlier answers, so respondents only see what is relevant to them.
Calculations can total scores, prices, or quantities live as people type. With YeetForm you describe all of this in plain English, such as asking for a follow-up question only when someone selects a certain option, and the AI builds the rules for you, including conditional logic and calculations on the free plan.
Publish and share
Once the form is ready, publishing gives you a shareable link you can send by email or message. You can embed the same form inline on a page, open it in a modal, drop in a web component, or pull it through the JS SDK or REST API, and a QR code makes it easy to collect responses in person or on printed material.
After responses start arriving, review them in one place. YeetForm gathers submissions for you and offers AI response analytics so you can spot themes and summaries without exporting to a spreadsheet first.
